The Illustrated Reader
is basically a program
that reads text files.
But unlike ordinary text
file readers, this pro-
gram runs in graphics
mode, and can display hi-
res, full-color pictures
along with the text.
This means that The
Illustrated Reader (or
the "IR" for short) can
serve as a viewer for electronic books, manuals, training materials,
guides, novels and any other illustrated documents.
But perhaps the intriguing thing about the IR is that it is designed
to display ordinary text files that can be written in a text editor or
word processor, and to display ordinary graphic files (PCX format) that
can be produced with most popular paint programs for the PC. This means
that anyone can become an electronic author! There is absolutely no
programming knowledge necessary!
First, you will want to familiarize yourself with how the
Illustrated Reader works, which should take only a minute or two,
since the controls at the bottom of the screen are self-explanatory.
Press the F1 key to "pop up" a list of all the key or mouse commands.
The Illustrated Reader (IR for short) can read any text file,
but you probably want to read the files that came with the program:
To read each of these documents, just press F2 (or click on the
graphic F2 key below if you have a mouse) and this will bring up the
Reader Options Menu. Pick the first option, LOAD A NEW FILE, which
will bring up a list of all the files in the current subdirectory.
Just follow the directions and select whichever one you want to read.
If you get interrupted, don't worry, you can set a "bookmark" which will
reload that file and take you back to the exact page where you left off!
You might want to start by reading MANUAL.DOC, which explains in more
detail all the menus and features of the program.
All files listed above have many illustrations
as examples. Be sure to read the IDEAS article,
which could make you a shareware author! Finally,
please don't forget the LICENSE.DOC file. It tells
how to register your copy of The Illustrated Reader,
and explains all licensing and distribution policies,
as well as benefits for registered users.
THANK YOU AND ENJOY!
